Password protection ??

I'm just a self-taught web designer. Recently I was invited to participate in a project which involves creating a password protected site hosted in the company's own server. I don't know anything about servers and was wondering if this access control thing can be done by me or do they have to hire a technician for that? Please tell me if this is too hard for me or if there's some book that can teach me the basics

As for your question...It can be rather easy depending on what type of webserver they are using? What type of website creation software are you planing on using for the site?
