ive connected my laptop to my desktop using a crossover cable. When I restarted my desktop (Windows 98), I got a dialogue box at startup asking for a domain name. I am very sure that I did not check the "log on to windows NT" option in network properties. Now I cant even log on to windows

Help! (Ive reformatted my hard drive at least 2 time a day for 1 week already!)

The only way that Win98 should be prompting you for a domain is if you selected that in the Properties for Client for Microsoft Networks when you set up Win98.

If you want to access files on the WinXP Pro, open Help and Support there and search for share drives. If you mistakenly set up WinXP as a domain member, it may mess you up. It should be a Workgroup setup (unless you need to connect to a domain at work).

I find that clicking "Cancel" at logon in Win98 lets you log on "locally". You won't have access to drives/folders on WinXP though.

I am very sure that my laptop is only part of a workgroup. I am also sure that the option to log on to windows NT domain is not checked. And when I press cancel in the startup, windows would give me an error saying that i could not log on to windows without specifying a domain. What seems to be the problem. Before, I could access files from both computers however, there will come a time when I boot into windows that this problem will arise.

Try re-running the Home Networking Wizard on WinXP. It may be propagating some weird network setting to the Win98 PC.
