LOL dont complain about works pc if your going to play quake/and demos and store zips of your car. Take out the trash in that puppy 128mbs of ram is ok. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

But seriously at work I am the "tech chef" as the systems in our resturants office lan die I replace them for about the cost of an hours worth of the company that was servicing us before.

Like for instance about 9 months ago. Before I got them fired. They replaced a HD moved us up to a 2gig drive.....a referbished maxtor. Well it crashed out in 3days and they charged for the repair. Total cost 700$...for a new HD! We are talking about 4 100mhz pentium systems the horror stories begin there.

Well after the first K6/2-500 system was built.Tekram p5m4 m+/ 50x acer cd/ 15gig drive/ 256mbs ram...Total cost 700$

The clamor to be next was warming to my heart. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I cant wait to see the owners face when I tell him the next one is going to have to cost alot less...sorry but prices have been dropping. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Work machine??? It's a total joke.
I work in wholesale parts sales at a Ford dealer, and here's what EVERY Ford dealership is using to look up parts.

486DX2-66
170mb HD
8mb RAM
3.5 floppy
Windows for Workgroups 3.11

That's the BETTER machine, the rest are 486SX25's!!

Dealer Computer Service thinks these are great and are still selling them!
Recently they came up with a MAJOR upgrade option.
Available for the server unit only

A Cyrix MII-300. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

...And the contract stipulates we cannot use other machines with their software...

All are wor sys are HP's on the support desk we run

GeForce GTS2 32 meg
Soundblaster Live
30 GIG IBM 7200 rpm

IBM PC 300GL
Celery 300
64 meg RAM
9ish GIG
S3 video
15" monitor
NO SOUND CARD (stupid thing just beeps.)

most of what I do is email, AS/400 emulation or TELNET to one of about 20 UNIX boxes so really I don't need much more. The real drag is the limited bandwith to the internet from our network.

The only time a game was on this PC was when I drew the short straw for Y2K Jan 1 support duty. I was hungover and needed to kill time while no one was calling. I was kinda glad there was no sound that day.

Lost my slug work Pentium 75 with 24MB 2.5Gb with (NT4!)the other day and was asked to get a 486dx50 4Mb 120Mb h/drive up and running with win95, our equip database and PCAnywhere. They wouldnt listen but anyway it worked real slow. Should have seen how slow things were using another PC with PCAnywhere and accessing the 486. They learnt pretty quick (in fact it runs like **** on a PII with heaps of ram). So no complaints ok about quake not running so great at work.

caddmannq: you know the KT133 does not support ECC RAM don't you. It'll work but you wasted money on ecc.

Didn't knew KT133 doesn't support ECC.
I use 512 MB PC133 ECC Infenion on my Asus A7V, wanna tell me it was waste of money for ECC ?
In fact, since ECC installed I have less crashes in PhotoShop (main crasher), and from I saw system works overally better, so maybe ECC did help, althought being unsupported http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Well,
although I work at a pc production company, the networked pcs suck like nothing has ever sucked before.

My colleague who is next to me, he had the following:

Intel pentium 166Mhz non-mmx
32Mb ram
1.2Gb hd
sis somewhat chip onboard
4Mb shared video memory
No sound
10Mbit nic

He got an "upgrade", which was:

Amd-k6 300Mhz
32Mb ram
3.2Gb hd
sis somewhat chipset
4Mb shared video memory
no sound
10Mbit nic

This is pethatic, I am ashamed and embarressed.

And they produce 1.2Ghz cows on production, and they give that kinda **** to the employees.

AT my work? IBM 8mhz 8086, hehe what a joke.
and an ancient dot matrix printer as well that print stuff that you can barely see but they're cheap. OH WELL whatever work for them. It 20 yrs old and they just going to keep using it until it die out on them. their rich, they have the money to buy 1G computer, 19' monitor, new Laser printer but they see no reason to. Just think about it, they keep 66-75 percent of the profit to them selve and pay us employee 25-33 percentage. but anyway the rich get richer which is very true.

ND,
the KT133 does not support ECC, so if your memory is ECC, it is not used. If your system is more stable with this memory it's because it is of higher quality than the one before, not the ECC.

I work level 2 tech support for a MAJOR insurance co. We just upgraded a claims office from old terminals hooked to AS400 servers, everybody now is using IBM 300PL's P-III 667's
128 MEG of IBM PC-133
20 Gig HD's (only use 2 Gig NTFS partition)
On board sound
On board NIC
Cheap 8Meg S3 video
17" IBM .25 monitors
NT 4.0 SP4
We have setup about 30,000 of these across the country. The users here are estatic. Got a T-1 line (no net before)that ties in to mainframe in Dallas that they use to run term. emulation (claims and underwriting software). Im everybodys friend when I get to their office!
These machines are all tested before we even get them, all I do is set them up, load a boot floppy that does a remote install of OS and apps. Life is good...even boring at times. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif ...steve

They gave me a P-90 when I first started for e-mail and such, shoved it under the desk and use it for a foot rest, never did plug it in http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gifThey need me, they have to come and find me. I haven't much time for a box at work anyway, too many systems to keep going!

ok,
ECC memory works with the KT133 chipset! Only ECC function is not supported, so there is no Error checking!! it will work like normal memory. Same for the KX133.

My MSI 6340 (KT133) at work has a setting for ECC RAM support in the bios. It does nothing though!

The A7V has a setting for ECC of the L2 (not RAM) and will work with ECC RAM as if it was normal memory.

NDD
12-13-2000, 03:56 PM
Cool enought for me. Maybe it truly more stable coz of "Infenion".
Anyway, I saw ECC capabilites when a ran Sisoft Sandra 2001 Pro mainboard module ...
Gonna check this issue for depth ...

NDC
12-13-2000, 05:40 PM
Yeah, I think Otheos is right. I did some searching on the KT133 chipset and I saw no documentation that it supported ECC functions, it said it nowhere!

LOL Dr Vette!!! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

As for the original question: Pretty bad!! That was easy...next question!! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Actually, they do suck. We use Gateway laptops. I believe they're PII 450's w/128mb RAM, running NT 4.0. I've locked them up so hard that I've had to take them out of their docking stations and remove the batteries in order to reset them. And I was just using everyday apps--no "tweaking" or foolin' around. We've also had to reformat them a few times, which really stinks considering they're needed 24/7.

Thanks Thud - I forgot about the laptop.

It's an IBM Thinkpad they gave me that has a little Pentium sticker on it - but I don't believe it! It's main purpose in life it to get me email and work network access at home while my wife is using our real computer. Man that laptop is a dog. I'll have to check what really is under the hood of that thing.

my home PC is my work PC...life is good !

it also looked like you have running:
Task Scheduler
IE
OE
Notepad
Volume Control
and 2 other systrey icons i don't recognize.

add the above to whatever might be running on startup that you DON'T\WON'T see.

Plus you say you HD is almost full, which could limit your swap file size (assuming you let windows manage it).....
could be draino time

check out startup in MSCONFIG and\or
ctl-alt-del to see what else is running, and see if you can stop some of the crappola running on startup( If they let you hack at your work PC's, that is. )

Well my workplace is steadily upgrading their computers. I trained on a pII 300 with 64 Mb of ram. Not a bad machine, but when 12 different TSR's are loading into memory, they are sluggish as hell. Not to mention all the machines are installed with corrupt installs of IE, and we get kernel errors on everything.

Because I was new, I got a new machine, PIII 600 with 128 Mb RAM. Woohooo!

We have PCAnywhere here and as soon as I get DSL at home, here comes the downloads! I can queue up a bunch while at work and they will be ready when I get home woohoo!

well, I have to use a compaaccckk deskpro 4000 with a 133 pentium and 32 megs ram. 2.1 gig HD, an inoperable floppy and cd rom.
I took the cover off of it a while back and there was so much dust in it I literally could not see the surface of the motherboard!! I do not know how it ws still going,I guess the dust bunnies were holding it together. they must not have been conductive. The only good thing is that we have a T-1 and at night, the surfin' is pretty good. It actually does pretty good on alot of the cartoon sites like icebox.com.
