Thank You G Ray88. dmoltrup 03-14-2002, 09:56 PM The first 80MB hard drives weren't available until approximately 1991-92. They would have been APPROXIMATELY $100 per MB, when first introduced. This would make it ABOUT $8,000. The problem was getting a computer to run it without having to split it into 4 logical drives. Someone out there (probably Bovon) may have an old catalog with one of the first 80MB drives and an actual price. Sidenote: Most people on this board in 1985 were using TRS-80s and C64s. The IBMs were still primarily business machines and MUCH too costly for personal use. See if you can make sense of the following image: http://www.storagereview.com/guideImages/z_ibm_storageevolution.gif Fatal_Exception 03-15-2002, 06:23 AM I have one of the first ever made commercially. It is a Shugart 7.5 MB hard drive. It has a GE washing machine motor that turns the spindle and a servomotor to position the read/write head. It weighs about 35 lbs and it has a hole in the case for you to tighten down a set screw in order to park the drive. Shugart sold his company and started Seagate after he got bored with a life of leaure. I believe the SCSI standard is based on the standard he developed for his hard drives. Neat, huh.... I'm told this particular hard drive was bought for one of the first environmental chemical labs and cost over $5000 in the late 60's or early 70's G Ray88 03-16-2002, 09:33 PM Dmoltrup,Fatal_Exception,Thank You for your information and chart, After a closer look at the two drives that I have, the tag show them to be built by Micropolis, M/N 1325, Shows a date on tag at the bottom of the drive 01/22/87. I had a choice of HD's, 80mb, 120mb or 170mb. I went for the 120 at a cost of about $225 if I remember correctly. This was in a 486 sx25, 4mb of ram, 2400 baud modem, 1mb video etc. No cd-rom drive. Cost $1200 value on todays market- 10 cents dmoltrup 03-18-2002, 09:58 PM I'll give you $.15 for it. Plus $60 for s/h! SysOpt.com
