Really? I thought Quantums were inferior. What do you others think?

I'm not saying Maxtor is the best (because IBM is http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif), just that I thought they were better than Quantum.

When doing my homework before buying my last HDD, it seemed that lots of folks were having problems with Quantum's Bigfoot line, which I believe are their 5400 RPM drives. A lot of people like the Fireball (7200RPM). I've also read that Quantum makes really good SCSI drives. Most of this was found on www.deja.com (http://www.deja.com) (when it was Dejanews).
As an aside, I read a while back that Maxtor and Quantum are merging. I don't remember if they're sticking with one name or the other, but my theory is that Maxtor wanted the SCSI recognition, and Quantum stands to improve the reputation of their IDE drives.

I personally use IBM. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Dead Drives here in 6 months

2 Quantums, 1 Bigfoot, 1 Fireball
1 Maxtor
2 Western Digital

Quantum Fireball drives come in 5400 and 7200, That I know, maybe more rpm's too.

Bigfoot Drives are 4400 possibly 3800 too, not sure. I saw some sub 4k Q. Bigfoot drives a while back.

Hmmm. I seem to have had far different experiences than some of you.

I have a Quantum lct10 HDD and LOVE it. It's ultra-quiet (far quieter than a WD) and very fast for a 5400 RPM drive.

Hey, haven't Quantum recently bought Maxtor?

I have two Quantums, both excellent!

I have used a ton of IDE Maxtors - only a couple bad in the lot, but they have all been kind of slow 5400 UDMA33s and UATA66,

I have used a few Quantums and they seem all right so far - very fast 7200 UATA 66 and Ultra SCSI3 7200 (only bummer is that I only have an Ultra Wide 40mb/s card).

EDIT: ~Warthog, it could have been worse - it could have been a Western Digifail.

The Dell pledge:

It just looks like every person has their own experience with hard drives. Personally I've never had a hard drive go bad on me.*knock on wood* http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif For now I trust Maxtor. I have 3 of them and they are nice drives. I also have a Western Digital drive that is quite nice too. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I don't like to try different things. I buy what I've had luck with and I stick with it.

Before becoming a Quantum fan I'd owned four WD drives and never had one go bad despite years of use. I know a lot of people don't like them but I never once had trouble.

I've owned countless number of WD drives, and they all worked flawlessly for me as well! Very good drives! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Still running strong and healthy! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Warthog... Did you not think I would see this?!!? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

I've had a lot of Quantum drives, and they've always been well preforming drives. They seem to last forever, too. The only Quantum drive I am NOT interested in is the Bigfoot Series.

I must be seeing only the *Lemon* series of Western Digital - but then about the only time I am asked to look at a puter is when ther is a problem...

..lest we talk about Socalgal's "DOA" Western Digital/Fry's special.. click/clunk..click/clunk...click/clunk

I RMA'd a Seagate only once - but many say they're junk - BTW Seagate sent the same size back.

I RMA'd a couple Maxtors - I like their policy.. I kept getting larger drives back - RMA'd a 3GB got back a 6GB.

I RMA'd a Samsung - toooook forever...same size back.

I put all my HDD's through some heavy thrashing, and believe it or not, not once have I had to return a HDD to a manufacturer for a repair service.... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I've always had good luck with Quantum drives, particularly the Fireball's, and that's all I've used in recent years due to some bad experiences with a couple of Maxtor's that I had. The Maxtor's that I had were noisy from the get go, and both failed within a couple of months. I just recently switched to an IBM 30gb 75GXP (ATA100, 7200rpm) and so far so good.....extremely quiet, fast drive.

Yesterday, I was looking at the insides of my comp in preparance for my new IBM hd (never installed a hd before). It looks pretty straight forward. Anyways, I looked at the existing 10gb Dell installed hard drive and low and behold.....it's a Quantum!! I thought they used Maxtor's??? Ughhhhhh!

Also, their tech support is starting to suck. Whenever I call them, they tend to have to look up the answer in the handy-dandy "answer book" that they have. Pathetic.

Ha! You know what they have in their 8100 series (P4s)? Western Digital hds! Look at the review in Max PC.

Proprietary mobo, too.

People use to brag about Quantum Fireball being awesome etc but this drive is quite buggy. It isn't that great by now maxtor have surpasses them way beyond anything. They use to suck but they are catching up really fast. My last 30gig from Maxtor was most quiet drive I gotten so far and somewhat pretty fast.

lol, CMonster - the man with the memory of an elephant! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif That *was* the one that fell off the truck, remember? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Oh and let's not forget the WD on the recall list that I purchased at the Reseda Comp Show, which when RMA'd got me a new (same size) WD. Or, the one that gave it up right at warrantee time... which when RMA'd got me a new (slightly larger) WD drive.

I still have a couple of WD's in action; a 20G as a backup on W2K and another 6.5G as a backup on WhyME umm.. WinME. No problems, so far, but then they are just backups.

My first ever Maxtor 6.5G cracks 24/7 on WinME for about 6 months now - no problems. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif (thanks, Mntsnow http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif )

The WDs are being phased out gradually here tho, as I'm sold on IBM as my drive of choice (waiting for those 45giggers, Warthog! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif ) I would still say WD makes a good drive, though.

I think that Dell does an excellent job of testing components for compatibility and quality within their systems. The problem I've had with them in the past is that they dumb down the motherboard so you can't upgrade the processor very far. Then you have to buy a new mobo from them to upgrade. I think this is standard practice for the major brand name makers though. Of course I build my own now http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif.

Quantum drives have always been good to me. I've had to RMA Maxtor, WD, and Fujitsu drives, but never a Quantum. I'm about to RMA another Maxtor that crashed on me last week...
