Intel today announced the smallest, fastest CMOS transistor. This breakthrough will allow Intel within the next five to 10 years to build microprocessors containing more than 400 million transistors, running at 10 gigahertz (10 billion cycles per second) and operating at less than one volt. More can be found here (http://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/releases/cn121100.htm?iid=update+001211&) .

And for a platform they will be installing it directly into the cerebral cortex thereby making mobo's extinct! This is almost the same press release that IBM had 2 yrs ago with the copper(not sure of the metal !) transistors.. IOW massive speed, small, low volts...Im still waiting to see anything ...steve

Will I need this power just to access the net or do word processing, or just to play games?

In my opinion this is just another Intel phantom project designed to boost poor stock performance.
They have a history of this, remember when the high speed p3's came out, intel said they were shipping yet you couldn't find one.
Released p4's at outragous pricing, then a week later anounces price cuts, not to mention that the p4's barely outperform p3's,but they needed something.
Just think of the frame rates that puppy could handle..... we'll get to the point where the frame rates will be so fast, our corneas will rip off our eyes (O)(0).
10 billion cycles per second.... at least there won't be any hum...
Rat...

I'm sure they will make games that have to run at that CPU spec. The game box will say something like "Minimum System Requirement: Intel Pentium 10 / 9GHz or better..... " LOL http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif. That's the way games seem to be nowadays. The faster the CPU gets, the more of the CPU juice the game needs to run! LOL

According to moore's law, that would be slighlty behind industry standard if I'm not mistaken'
Or was that some other law?

Intel is just dreaming! Sure, in the near future CPUs will be much faster, but they took a major dump with the P-4 and are talking pooh pooh trying to keep customers loyal. Lookout Intel, AMD is about to drop the "HAMMER" http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

in 11 years, i'll wait for them to recall the chip. haha
I've come to a conclusion regarding hardware speed over time.
IT DOESN'T MATTER!
I once had a 386sx25 which did everything needed adequately. Upgraded to a 386DX40 which FLEW through the same stuff.
Then the software changed.
Repeat cycle over and over.
No matter WHAT hardware they make, the programmers will find a way to bring it to it's knees, making you THINK it's slow.
I firmly believe that with decent, efficient programming there would be no need for the hardware to change at the pace it has been.

Intel is still dreaming.. AMD would probably still be in front then.. LOL http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Yeh.. wot use is Ghz.. when the P4 1.5ghz can't even beat a Duron at real-world benchmarks.. (games etc.) LOL... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I wonder how fast Intel 10Ghz be?? 8Ghz AMD?? hehhe... just a thought..

I agree with you 101%! That's how things are now and that's the way things are going to be....

yes, I also agree,
Someone please humor me with the riggors of producing a processor at one speed, and then labeling in at a higher speed when it is shipped, someone needs to have a little chat with your shipping yard http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

AMD and Intel...not even a competition, wonder why cpu's are such a hot topic lately?

5-10 yrs from now who knows intel is just dreaming. We'll wait until then but I doubt it be just 10gig maybe 20-30G!!!

Ummm Intel wont Be around By then... There gonna go Out of buzniz In about 1-2 years due too overpiced slow chips. AMD's stock will rise and we will have once choice. AMD People wont remember intel...
Yes and I agree with Ed_S also http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I have to disagree with you on this....The PC world could not afford to have Intel or AMD go out of business!!!! It is only the competition between Intel and AMD for market share that has made the market as affordable and as technologically advanced as it is. Imagine who would push either company to make advances if there were only 1 major player? AMD or Intel reigning supreme would be the absolute worst possible scenario for the computing world as they would dictate what, where and when we would receive new chips, unlike now where there are releases and price cuts weekly. Look at what MS has done to the desktop world...Linux (all flavors) is at best a fringe alternative for mainstream users along with the other minor players Oracle, Unix(other than business apps)etc. If there had been a competitor that was capable of pushing MS ten yrs ago to the extreme, who knows what we might be using now as an OS besides Windoze products....?
Competition is what makes the engine of the computing world go around and without it we will all be driving Yugos. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif steve
And does anyone remember Zilog, creator of the Z-80? It was an improvement over Intel's 8080 and millions still are running in gadgets worldwide. Oh, if only there were a "Zentium" lineage. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Here's another thought! DEC oops...Compaq's Alpha chip http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I forsee prices dropping on these little hotties and ending up on home machines http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Talk about quick chips http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif an old Alpha equivelent to an old 486/50 still out-performs Intel-266s http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I still have my Commodore 64 ! Its put away in a closet but I can guarantee you that I could have that thing running in 10 minutes.Imagine a world dominated by them? A Commodore 6400 with an Apple G4 cpu? It could have happened!! Sorta scary though..

how many of you have actually read the article at sharky's extreme... it is fairly informative... I suggest that those of you who haven't read it before laughing to hard!
don't misunderstand me... it's certainly not very plausible, but the fact that they actually made a 30nm transistor is amazing...
good for them because chances are it'll be good for us sometime down the line...
keep your eyes on the molecular and quantum electronics... those two areas are gonna replace silicon soon enough anyway!

Effective December 10, 2000
Effective December 10, Intel will reduce prices on select Intel® Pentium® 4 processors, Intel Pentium® III processors, and Intel Celeron™ processors through authorized distributors.
As the strong ramp to Intel's newest microarchitecture gets underway, Intel is reducing the price of Pentium 4 1.4GHz processor to help enable more mainstream system price points below ~$1999. Intel Pentium® III processors at 750 MHz, 733 MHz, 700 MHz, and 667 MHz prices are being reduced as the industry transitions to higher MHz products. Prices are also being reduced on Intel Celeron™ 766 MHz processors in order to continue to offer competitively priced value processors. These processors are available at the new price points only while supplies last.
The percentage decline of Intel's published 1000-unit processor price is listed below, along with the new boxed processor Intel Channel Rebate (ICR, previously MIP). This percentage of price decline is similar to the price decline for Intel boxed processors sold to authorized distributors. Intel Product Dealers should expect to see similar percentage declines in their quoted boxed processor prices from authorized distributors. The new price and ICR are effective as of December 10, 2000. Please contact your authorized Intel distributor after December 10 for specific pricing and availability details.

Just rember that Intel has been dominating AMD for years. Intel has had the best chip around for a very long time, it is only very recently the AMD has provided a better chip. Just about a year ago everyone here was most likly, all for Intel. I think that lately Intel has just been slacking off, but they'll probley come out with a hard hitting chip that will blow away AMD. They are smart enough to see that the P4 sucks and that they better get their act in line or else. I am guessing they'll come out with somthing like a P4-DDx, as they did with the P2-MMX. The P4 is really a kick *** cpu, but Intel just wasen't using common sense and left out a few major factors. All they gotta do is prefect the P4 and it will be a kick *** processor.
