I have an HP Kayak Xa with a Pentium II 266mhz processor. I wish to upgrade the processor but I need to know if I need to upgrade the motherboard also, can you help??

I wish to upgrade the processor but I need to know if I need to upgrade the motherboard also, can you help?? shark_megabyte 03-08-2002, 11:43 AM That's going to depend on two things 1) The board you have in there now, and 2) How far you want to upgrad your processor If you want to swap in a Pentium 3 or 4, a Celeron (yech) , or any AMD processor, you will need a new motherboard too. Any time you change class or brand like that, you're going to need to switch the board too. If you're looking at any of the above for your new CPU, or you just want to go somewhere higher than 450mhz, you need a new board. If you only want a speed of 450 or lower, then you would need to look through the manuals that came with your machine (or some HP online support pages), looking for the model number of your motherboard. If it doesn't say right there in the book what CPUs the board supports, then you can jump online and look it up. I'm guessing that you will probably want faster than 450mhz, and so you'll need a new board. Look around at reviews, and try to get one that is KNOWN to work well with the processor you decide on.
