I appear to have lost some files all with suffix .vxd, they are:
vmm shell vtd vxldr vpigd win32.
On start up I get the first page, chip size, drives etc. then windows 98 logo page for 3-4 secs. then a screen that tells me one or more of these files is missing or wrong version. 'press any key to continue'.
On pressing any key the 'safe to turn your computer off' message comes up and thats as far as I get.
I've looked on the windows 98 CD, can't find the files.
I've run find file on another computer and it comes up blank.
any ideas please...

Have you changed or installed or deinstalled anything lately?
You can reinstall Windows on top of itself to refresh the files. It will not wipe out what is currently on your computer.
On the other hand, you may want to get ahold of a virus checker to see if your system got infected.

Your VMM32.VXD files are corrupted or some are miising. There is 2 ways to fix it. 1. You can reinstall Windows or repair it your self. Follow this link (http://tweakhomepc.virtualave.net/update/vmm32vxd.html) for a fix.

First thing I would try is.
Boot into dos from a boot disk.
Then run scandisk from there. Make it through also.
Then run " scanreg /restore" (no quotes also note the space before the /) see if you get lucky.
If this doesn't work. The files are on the windows disk.
VMM32.VXD = WIN98_48.CAB
SHELL.VXD = WIN98_47.CAB
VTD.VXD = WIN98_48.CAB
VXDLDR.VXD = WIN98_48.CAB
VPICD.VXD = WIN98_48.CAB (I think you missed the spelling on
this one, I didn't find a vpigd).
Then go Here (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?ln=EN-US&pr=kbinfo&) inter this number Q129605. This will tell you how to replace a file from dos mode.
Then replace Cab file 47 & 48.
Myself at this point. If I didn't have anything on the computer that I minded to loose. I would format and reinstall.
Also when you do a search for a file do it from the containing text section. Not the named section.

!:)
I just got back on-line. I took Rocketmech's advice. It was a new experience extracting cab files. The start up disk I have has the programme and instructions on it. They loaded OK but the computer dropped them on first reboot.
I have now formatted C drive and run PC Cillin. Everything is now back on and running like a dream, though it was before the files disapeared.
If it happens again I'll be in touch. Thanks for the help.
This is a great site... keep it up!!!!
Dave.
