I don't know about comparisons, but I have the Kodak DC280 and it's great for its price... which is way below $500. It's 2 MegaPixels, comes with an 8MB Flash Card, a serial/USB connector to transfer to your computer, and rechargeable batteries. I picked mine up for ~$315 (with techbargains.com coupons) a few months back from BUY.COM...
But check CNET.com for digital camera comparisons and read user reviews. The DC280 is a great place to start looking...

Also, you can check the Reviews at the following Site :

Another good info source is Imaging Resources (http://www.imaging-resource.com/)
They've got a good side-by-side comparison available, too.
I've got an HP C200, and a Fuji MX1200. The Fuji is my favorite of them. Got good features, small & easy to use. Both have been trouble-free after almost a year.
Image transfer can be done via a cable which is usually included, or an external device such as a USB film reader. I've got a "Flash Path" which is a floppy disk adapter for SmartMedia type memory cards.
You just insert the mem card into the adapter, then slide it into your floppy drive. Comp reads it like a disk. Works great!

Hello folks,
I need a decent (2+ megapixel) digital camera for less than $500. Any suggestions?
Also, I've never owned one. How does one load pics from the camera to the puter? Are there external USB or firewire devices for such things?
Thanks!
