Weird things are happening to my PC at work.
Recently, the following happened:

1)CD-RW drive disappeared and is not recognized by W2K (it doesn't show up in My Computer as a drive). There is an error message I found in Event Viewer that says: The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block.
Earlier msgs from 8/01 mention a warning:
An error was detected on device \Device\CdRom0 during a paging operation.

2)Zip drive has met the same fate but I can't find any errors/warnings in Event Viewer.

3) The volume control on the PC is wacky. The volume quits every time I try to play a song
and I must go to the task bar every time to click on the volume level to hear anything.

Some PC details: It's 3 years old, PIII and 256MB
RAM I've got lots of different programs running on it, and it's functioning at 57% right now.

A thousand thanks for your help!!

Sorry that wasnt very helpful.

Have you tried removing the CDROM & Zip drive from w2k then reinstall with new up to date drivers?

Did this just start to happen after you installed something? When did you notice this happen?

Q: Have you tried removing the CDROM & Zip drive from w2k then reinstall with new up to date drivers?

A: I will try reinstalling the up to date drivers.
How do I get these up to date drivers?

Thank you.

Q: Did this just start to happen after you installed something? When did you notice this happen?

A: It seems all of a sudden they just conked out on me. I don't remember installing anything new or different on my PC when this started happening about a month ago.

I've run virus scan too but everything is ok.

Thanks for your help.

Could be a power issue, I have had a couple of PC's where the CD is the first to go when the power is failing.

Is it an internal Zip?

If so, try removing the power cable, and also remove any unnecessary (for booting purposes) cards - eg NIC, Soundcard. Then boot the PC and see if the CD makes an appearance.

If it does, it is likely to be power.

Is the zip drive connected to the same ribbon cable as the cdrw?
Try a new ribbon cable. Also try booting without the zip drive attached to the ribbon cable and see if the cdrw appears. And boot into safe mode, go the System Properties, Device Manager, click the + on the cdrom option and + on the disk drives option. The cdrw should only be displayed 1 time, same with the zip drive.
