I have an ASUS A7V266-E Motherboard, alog with an athlon 1600xp, geforce 3 & audigy soundcard, plus 512 ddr ram.

For no apparent reason this evening my scanner refused to work, after looking puzzled for a few minutes i did a reboot, this time i got an error message saying error on keyboard or no keyboard.
I pressed F1 to continue (yes on keyboard) and the pc booted up but the mouse won't work.

After a while i sussed it all out, no USB device is working, the keyboard is a usb but it's plugged into a ps2 socket so that explains why it works despite the error message.

I have tried unplugging devices to no avail, all my usb devices will not work incl printer, scanner etc, yet winxp says in control panel that my usb's are all working fine.

Please someone, anyone, Help!

You chose WinXP...go with Win 2000 Pro. Trust me XP isn't going to be worth it until the bugs and service packs finish coming out (the service packs haven't even started yet). If you want the the XP feel because you like getting off on the new look & feel then install Win2k Pro along with a system skin utility.

I have basically the same setup except i havea 1800 XP with the Geforce 4 Ti 4600...and it all works fine with Win2k Pro...usb's too.

Remove any and all USB devices from any offboard hub and try them in the PC ports. If you have added other hardware recently, consider a more powerful, Athlon-approved PS. There is a new VIA USB filter driver available:

could you have a problem in the bios where the io devices are screwed?
I would check that, it could be a virus, or a bug in XP. I agree with win2000 pro, I still use 98SE and it is probably better than XP at the moment - when XP2 comes out (i.e. couple of service packs later) it will be a much better product.

Thanks for those comments.

I have actually had my current system running under WinXP for some 4 months with no problems it's just all of a sudden gone T*ts Up.

I have taken out all the other devices and i've just tryed the mouse in the main onboard USB slot to no avail.

It sounds weird but it's as if my motherboards USB facility has just given up the ghost.

Try removing the USB Root Hub and then the Host Controller in Device Manager. Restart and redetect.

You may want to visit Safe Mode and "Show hidden devices" in Device Manager too.
