looking for a good scanner. ease of use is a priority . need's to be easy enough for an adult to use (kids can figure out anything).main use would be photo storage, transfer.

Since Ease-Of-Use is priority, I'd definetly say to go with either USB or Parallel Port interface scanner, not SCSI.

I've had countless numbers of scanners, Epson, Mustek, UMax, Microtek, etc. But if you want a scanner that is very affordable and low CPU utilization, get a Mustek scanner and you won't regret it! I'd especially like to emphasize LOW CPU UTILIZATION.... You will notice that the screen freezes or slows down big time while an image is being scanned at a high resolution such as 800dpi and up which is an appropriate setting for printing high-resolution photos.... But as for Mustek scanners, you won't even know that an image is being scanned! Whatever model you get, USB, SCSI, Parallel port interface, I'd recommend getting a Mustek scanner for various important reasons, (1) It's cheap (2) performance (3) quality

NDC is a long-time member with a good reputation, so his advice is probably sound.

HOWEVER, the only experience I've had with a Mustek is poor.

HP is my choice for scanners, I've bought seveal

3200c 4ea
3300c 1ea
5pse 2 ea
5200cse 2 ea

The 5200 is the latest pick, HP has some Great deals on "Refurb" equipment.

They also have a good reputation for making refurbs as quality as new.

"" The HP ScanJet 5200CSE Business Series color scanner delivers quality results up to three times faster than other scanners. One button starts any project!""

Scan Resolution: Enhanced 9600 dpi

ScanJet 5200CSE Flatbed Color Scanner
Our Price: $79.95 - $10.00 = $69.95

This one does not have any external power supply to go BAD.

It's very heavily constructed, the Heaviest scanner I've seen yet.

It comes with a USB and a Parallel cable..

This unit retailed for $300.00

Quantity Remaining: 164

I have a mustek myself and am totally pleased with it. Its a little older and slower but it never lets me down.

Oh, yeah! HP makes quality scanners as well, they perhaps have a better reputation than Mustek since HP is a such a well known brand, but I think it's just a TAD expensive for general users.

When you buy a scanner, don't be fooled into buying a scanner because it says "24.000dpi scanning". That's all just a useless sales pitch. Trust me, you will never, I repeat never scan an image at such resolutions, nor will you have the necessary memory or disk space to handle an image that size on your HDD! That's just a software max resolution that it supports.

What you should look closely at is the Optical Resolution. Optical Resolution of 600 x 1200 will be more than enough to give you clear, crisp scanned image. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Here is a scanner that my buddy's using and it works great! The price is great too!

Optical Resolution: 600 x 1200

Software Resolution: 19,200 dpi

Max Color Bit: 42-bit color (24bit should be more than enough to the human eye)
