I'm looking for a new motherboard and am only really intirested in stability, not speed. This computer will only be used for AutoCAD R14+ and NOT GAMES. I've read that PIII motherboards are the most stable (can't remeber what chipset).
Any sugestions?

I like the i815T (Tualatin) boards. The Asus TUSL2-C is a fine example. They can host up to a 1.4GHz server-grade CPU and are dead dependable. I have two and dread the day that will have to upgrade.
The i820 and i850 boards are very good too, but require RDRAM (expensive) memory.

What about the onboard ATA/100 controller? Where the early versions that where on these boards a bit quarky?

What about the onboard ATA/100 controller? I can't speak for that because I routinely install a Promise controller for the HDDs and use onboard for CD/DVD/CDR only. I do know that the i815T is a refinement of the slightly buggy i815E. I assume that any problems in the i815 would have been fixed in the i815T.

I might have to get a newer board (thats what they want). If you were to upgrade ritght now and where only intirested in stability and reliability for CAD what P4 type motherboard do you think you would get?
Thanks for the input...... The i815E was the chipset that I could not remember.....

I like Asus products for stability and BIOS quality. Both of these are quite good. The i850 is better for future CPU upgrades, but the i845 uses less expensive DDR RAM:

Tested and verified. INTEL D850MV motherboard is the most stabil one I've ever seen. If stability is important for you, go for Intel.

No You do not have to go INTEL just to be stable.
There are lots of AMD systems out that are just as stable.
I know because I have one.
The 8KHA+ I have is solid as a rock.
Now running Win2000Pro and could't be happier.

Yah, yah...except this is an Enterprise PC we're talking about. If you were running a business where you needed the most reliable and servicable hardware that you could get, what would you buy?
Be truthful now. Hey! Swear on your favorite dog's grave! ;)

Since I don't have a choice in the matter of what PCs my company buys, the question is moot. If I did have the call, I would go with MSI K7T266 Pro2 and a Duron 900. MSI is known for their stable boards and the Duron performs as well, and sometimes better than the smae mhz PIII, plus it's cheaper than a celeron. Tom's Hardware had a review of the MSI board.
By the way, I am currently using the Pro2 in my main system and build them for others..

Hey I have Intel D815EEA (815e chipsets) motherboard with a PIII 1 ghz with 256MB sdram runnin on it.Its rock stable, never had a problem with it. I run win2K pro,Winxp pro,Winme and Redhat linux 7.1 and all of them run great.
The onboard ATA 100 controller also runs well I have a Seagate 60GB ata100 barracuda drive on the primary ide and and an Asus 16X DVD E616 ata100 on the secondary and all runs well. never had a problem with any parts.
I do a lot of video editing on the system and its also used for lots of encoding, and other stuff. well its been good to me for the last 1 year or so.
But i must say after seein an AMD system i would go for it if incase i had to upgrade maybe an Athlon 2000+ and any KT266A chipsets mbd from ASUS or Abit or Soltek etc lots of choices there.
:)
