Hi everyone, I'm interested in building my first computer, and I need some advice. Sorry if this post makes me seem ignorant :)
First, does anyone have any opinions on the Soyo dragon series, and are they compatable with Athon processors? Or should I stick with an Athlon board for and Athlon processor. Like I said, I'm new at this, so any advice would be helpful. Thanks :)

Welcome to SysOpt!
I would start with an AMD chipset. You don't need any extra headaches, do you?
Gigabyte's GA-7DXR+ (http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/products/7dxr+.htm) is a hot-blooded sweetheart. It's easy to set up on default settings but allows all sorts of overclocking nonsense.
Whatever you get, good luck! We're here for you. :)

Yup....built-in ATA/133 RAID, USB 2.0 and Creative audio too. If I were going AthlonXP, it would be the one for me.
It's Blue too! :p

I would recommend an EPoX board. They're the easiest boards I have ever set up, fast and reliable. From what I hear the EP-8K7A+ is a real screaming board. Detailed specs are at www.epox.com on all of their boards. That's just my recommendation at the moment. I haven't gone athlon ...yet. I might hold out for the new Hammer to come out.

Nice, but no RAID and no USB 2.0. Take a look at this board. (http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/products/7dxr+p.htm) Look at that AGP slot. WTF is that? It looks like a "future-proof" AGP port. Nice touch, don't ya think?

OK, no USB 2 I understand. But what is up with RAID? I'm not all that familiar with it, but what is wrong with just using IDE? This board however does support up to four RAID devices. I just checked with EPoX.

RAID Definition (http://searchstorage.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid5_gci214332,00.html)
RAID is just another possible way to improve performance or provide fault tolerance. In these motherboards, you can use it or not. It also provides 4 more IDE ports so that you can have 8 IDE drives without having to install another controller card.
The more options the better, I figger. ;)
You are very right...the Epox has RAID too, My bad.
