Breakthrough In PC Backups, Or Just Breaking The Bank? Iomega Rev 70GB Review- Page 2/6

At the crux of the new 70GB Rev backup system is, of course, the media itself. Based on a standard 2.5" hard disk, the Rev disk is tiny (and the same size as the previous-generation Rev). It's lightweight, making it simple to carry (for road-warriors) or to store in a fire-proof safe (the recommended way for many small businesses to safeguard their sensitive data -- and of course, probably the method least-used).

Perhaps most importantly, it's also long-lived, according to Iomega. The media carries an estimated shelf-life of 30 years. How is this possible? For one thing, the disk itself contains only the hard disk platter and motor. The rest of the traditional hard disk drive assembly is housed in the drive itself.

Behold the brand-new external USB 2.0 Rev drive, which contains the sensitive parts of a traditional hard disk drive -- chief among which is the head assembly.

The Rev system is thus designed so that the disks are lightweight, portable, and relatively resistant to shock and other damage. When the Rev disk is inserted into the drive, the head assembly is inserted into the disk, which becomes an airtight chamber similar to the internals of more traditional hard disks.

Like some recent hard drive designs, the Rev can adjust the height the drive head flies over the disk according to temperature and environmental changes, which increases efficiency and reduces the risk for media damage.

This also enables the Rev to keep up a fairly consistent speed: Iomega claims the drive can transfer data up to 30MB/sec.

Additional features include two-stage error correction and an Eject button with a built-in blue LED light that flickers to indicate disk activity.

The Rev 70GB drive package includes one disk. Also included is a copy of EMC's Retrospect Express back-up software, along with a USB 2.0 cable and power supply cable.
