Drivers and Real World Performance
Like most software today, the OCZ Dominatrix drivers are a breeze to install. You also have an option of exactly what software you wish to install, including the 4-way scrolling drivers or Game Software separately, or both together. Now let's take a look at what the Game Software allows you to do.
You are able to assign commands for each mouse button under "Command Library" and "Browser Control", and you can go well beyond "Forward" and "Backward" buttons and you can assign buttons to Zoom In or Out.
For those who have used a Logitech G5 or a G7 mouse, you will find that the Dominatrix is a close to the same shape and size, and it feels eerily similar to these two aforementioned competitors. But this is a popular design with many different mice, and the Dominatrix feels very comfortable under normal use, and during gaming sessions. The default settings allow changing the DPI on the go, but there is only one button for that. It would be better to have two buttons, one for increasing DPI and one for decreasing DPI, which would speed up the overall process, especially DPI switches during hectic gaming sessions.
Having two side-mounted mouse buttons allows for better internet surfing, but having a "Forward" and a "Backward" button allows you to have more customization for your games. The more buttons the better, assuming designers don't get out of control and require a 4-year degree to operate it. Thankfully, the Dominatrix offers enough buttons and software customizations to be very useful, but without going overboard and created unneeded complexity.
While using the Dominatrix on a mouse pad, it is a comfortable and smooth experience. However, putting the same mouse on some different surfaces could yield adequate performance at best, so if you are planning to purchase this mouse, at least be prepared to use a decent mouse pad with it and everything should be fine.
Overall, OCZ has created a very functional and easy to use gaming mouse. In some ways, the Logitech G5 is preferable over the Dominatrix, simply because it is a more refined mouse. OCZ seemed to have taken features from more expensive mice, and put these in the Dominatrix while keeping its cost low. Overall, this strategy adds up to a good effort at a very good price.
