The official announcement of the Intel Atom didn't make a lot of waves, but now that we're seeing end products like the Acer Aspire One and MSI Wind, the processor deserves a lot more attention. With speeds of up to 1.6 GHz with Hyper-Threading technology, and a thermal design power as low as 0.65 watt, this diminutive challenger offers a very potent one-two punch.

04/30/2008 AMD Hits a Triple with the Phenom X3
The Phenom X3 triple-core processor is looking to fill the gap between dual and quad-core models, and AMD is hoping that its "three cores for the price of two" sales pitch comes off as well. The new X3 definitely has some positives, such as lower power and thermal envelopes, but also entails risks like demand exceeding the supply of not-quite-ready-for-primetime quad core silicon.

04/01/2008 AMD Launches the Phenom B3 and Brings Back the X4
AMD has finally released their Phenom "50-series", squashing that nasty TLB bug with a new and improved B3 core revision. Add in higher clock speeds, very competitive prices, a return to the easy-to-grasp X4 branding, and surprisingly good overclocking, and AMD at least has a shot against the Intel Core 2.

03/17/2008 Intel Set to Strike Back with the Yorkfield, Wolfdale, X48, and QX9300
After a few hiccups in early-2008, everything seems to be coming together for Intel. The emergence of the 45nm Yorkfield quad core, increased Wolfdale dual core stocks, the debut of the X48 Express chipset, and word of a quad core mobile CPU should help give Intel a very good second quarter.
