Power and Features Beyond Your Needs? Ultra X3 800W Power Supply Review- Page 4/4
November 29, 2007
By Thomas Soderstrom

Conclusion

The Ultra X3 800W is able to deal with huge loads - in our case powering two complete overclocked systems simultaneously - while also offering a bunch of features not found on many competing parts. But is it a good value?

Features such as modular power cabling and an oversized 135mm cooling fan with smart speed controls put the Ultra X3 800W among an elite class of competitors, while an 82% "average" efficiency rating potentially adds value by reducing operational expense. Though it is not "80-Plus" certified, the company's efficiency chart shows the unit dipping barely below 80% (79.8%) as it approaches 100% of its rated capacity. Ultra remains the only brand we've tested to show such high efficiency while using fully-modularized cables.

Great stability, features, and cooling performance combine with better-than-average efficiency to make the Ultra X3 our top 800W pick, and while a $200 average web price is typical of competing products, few of those come close to the same feature set.

Pros:

  • Extreme stability under excessive loads
  • Enormous 135mm cooling fan aids system cooling at low noise
  • Full-modular design reduces cable clutter
  • Flat ribbon-style power cables are very flexible and easy to route
  • Mirror-like metallic black finish for sophisticated style
  • 82% "typical" efficiency reduces operating expense
  • Single 60A 12V rail eliminates load-balance issues of multi-rail competitors
  • Added features at a class-average price
  • Limited lifetime warranty

Cons:

  • Not "80 Plus"-certified
  • 7.5-inch length requires two inches more mounting space than typical parts

The Verdict: A balance of exceptional features and extreme high-load stability make the Ultra X3 800W our choice among a crowded market of 800W power supply units.
