Power and Features Beyond Your Needs? Ultra X3 800W Power Supply Review- Page 2/4
November 29, 2007
By Thomas Soderstrom

Features Overview

The Ultra X3 800W power supply features the same extended length housing as the 1000W part that we'd already tested, and uses the same oversized 135mm cooling fan to draw warm air away from the CPU and expel it through a low-restriction mesh grill at the rear.

The Ultra X3 800W power supply also has the same connector panel as found on the 1000W version, also supporting extension power cables in a fully-modularized design.

In fact, the only real way to see the difference between the two power supplies is to look at the label, which indicates that the 800W version provides "only" 60A on its single 12V rail. Its 12V output comes up 10A shy of the previously tested 1000W part.

For those who didn't read the previous review, a single rail can beat multi-rail designs by allowing power to be split at any ratio supported by the limits of its cables, avoiding any per-rail limits that affect most competing products whenever the "wrong" combination of devices share a lower-amperage rail.

The X3 800W PSU includes the same power cable kit as found in the 1000W unit, with the following main device cables:

  • One 24-pin motherboard connector
  • One 4-Pin ATX12V motherboard connector
  • One 8-Pin EPS12V connector
  • Four 6-Pin PCI Express connectors
  • Two 8-Pin PCI Express connectors
  • One 4-Pin short power cable (often used to supply extra slot power to the motherboard)
  • One 3-Pin three-device fan connector

Likewise, the larger 1000W part's accessory/drive power cable kit is also found in the 800W version. These cables include:

  • One 5-conductor three-device SATA power cable
  • One 5-conductor dual-device SATA power cable
  • One 4-conductor three-device SATA power cable
  • One 4-conductor dual-device SATA power cable
  • One 4-pin three-device ATA-style power cable
  • One 4-pin dual-device ATA-style power cable
  • Two 4-pin three-device ATA plus floppy-style power cables

Ultra also bundles a very brief user's manual, four mounting screws, and a heavy-duty U.S.-style standard power cable.
